All of a sudden lag?
« on: December 25, 2013, 06:57 pm »
Ok so, I have this problem where most my games now start to drop frame rate. I could run Jc2 at a solid 100-120 fps but now its fluctuating between 20-30. Same other with most my games. To name a few: Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Universe Sandbox and Portal 2. My specs:

OS: Windows 7 Alienware 2010 64-bit
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU   M 620 @ 2.67GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.7GHz
RAM: 6144 MB
Video Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
DirectX Version: DirectX 11. Please help.
INB4 Alienware is Overpriced

Its probably full of dust or something like that.

You should atleast check the temps first.

As a laptop clocks itself down, to contain the amount of heat its making, so if its full of dusk and other things, it will become insanely hot, and then make itself slower than it usually were.

So check the temps and post them here.

If you dont know how to, google "HWMonitor" and download that.

Both, you open the program before you start the game, then play for 10-15min, and then take a screenshot for us to see.

Could possibly be a virus or some sort. But yes, as Justice said, check your temperatures, I was having the exact problem then only realizing it was my GPU which had extreme heat.

Another thing - AMD cards TEND to go high up to extreme heat. My old AMD HD Radeon 4870x2 used to go up to 90c+ while playing games and on idle around 60c-70c . I fixed this problem by adjusting the fan speed in Catalyst Control Panel. The fan speed on default was 25% , I had to boost it up to 50%-60% to fix the heat problem. Although this does method does make the fans louder, obviously. If your graphics card is at high temperature, you might want to see if increasing the fan speed of it makes a difference or buy a new one.

(If you're using a laptop, at least try to build up a computer than a laptop. As Justice said, dust does slow down your computer/laptop because it gains heat. Also I doubt you can replace the graphics card in the laptop, I don't know because I've never read or done that sort of thing before.)

I read somewhere why AMD cards tend to go up to high temperature, it is because AMD makes their cards so that when it is in use, the performance usage is high, taking everything the card can offer. On the newest AMD card, which in my opinion is better than the GTX 780, allows you to change that so it doesn't overheat.

Yes Im using a laptop. And I know that replacing graphic cards in laptops is possible but a pain in the Rutabaga.

Your temps are good for a laptop very good max you really want is 75c.  So either format and make sure you have no viruses.

Well also if you want a bit mpore speed try and look at also freeing some space up on the windows drive. Such as putting steam games on another drive

as andre said, having a windows drive that full will be slowing it down as well, if you still want more speed rearrange your storage to have a bit of free space on there
